The Wheat in the Barley play Canadian roots music with a major make-over. Crack songwriting, brilliant and warped arrangements and stunning instrumental solos unite under the banner of a savvy eclecticism that's always been the band's guiding light. The Wheat in the Barley pulls together a lot of great influences into one package: Celtic, Slavic, French Canadian, Yiddish, Cajun and more. With an impressive array of instruments at their command, the band puts on a show that's as danceable as it is listenable.

Henk Piket originally hails from The Netherlands but, as a young boy, moved with his family to Vancouver. He was immersed in folk music at an early age as his parents regularly took him to the Vancouver Folk Song Society’s song circles where he started singing and playing guitar. It is also where he met the other three founding members of Fraser Union, with whom he has performed over 40 years.
Henk has been a stalwart of Vancouver’s folk club and coffeehouse scene since the sixties, performing at legendary venues such as The Bunkhouse and The Ark. His adept fingerstyle guitar playing and warm bass voice accentuate his range of repertoire from country and jazz standards to the traditional and contemporary folk and blues that he loves so well.
Henk has enjoyed making and sharing music throughout his life. He can often be found in a song circle or music jam adding subtle vocal harmony, dobro, and guitar to the musical blend – a skill he continues to practice to great effect with Fraser Union, as well as solo performances.

Robert Bertrand has been a musician now for sixty years. He started on the trumpet at fourteen years old then moved onto guitar and harmonica. His early influences included, among others, Muddy Waters, Sonny Terry, Mississippi John Hurt, John Fahey, Gordon Lightfoot and Brian Jones of the Rolling Stones. Although his music is blues based, as you can see he has quite an eclectic style, including Folk, Country Blues and Rock n‘ Roll. He plays fingerstyle and slide guitar and also writes his own songs and instrumentals. He’s played in various venues over the years from Halifax to Dawson City. He was very pleased to play at Princeton‘s Traditional Music Festival in 2019 and is looking forward to preforming at The Copper Valley Music Festival 2023.
