Joann Esselink
Entry#1
 - Adult 2nd Place

Medium: Acrylic on Copper

If it where not for Covid, I would not have had the time to experiment with copper and the elements. I added to it to get the destressed colours I was looking for. It took about a month to clean the copper and another one to get the desired effect. The piece of copper was given to me for a Christmas present in 2020 by my daughter. The only point on the piece is the tree.

Sharron Basanti - Adult 1st Place
Medium: Watercolours

The pandemic has left even those of us who are introverts craving humxn connection. I never thought that  sipping on a cup of tea with another kindred soul at a café would become a privilege until Covid-19 struck. More than a year later, I still find myself holding a cup of tea as I gaze at my friends though a computer screen. I am grateful for the technology making  these "tea dates" possible via zoom. I now see the world  through another lens like many other people. I have slowed down...but so has the world, as these ordinary human experiences once take for granted, now feel extraordinary.

Child Entries

Mackenzie Rubis - Child Tied 1st Place
Medium: Creative Writing

My entry expresses my wish to write a fantasy like those of which I've enjoy. It stated when my 3rd grade teacher gave up an assignment "The thing in the sky".  My story started as a two page short story and gradually grew into a novelette. The reason I have added in so many different creatures is because I am fascinated by dragons and other mythical creatures such as Sirens, a winged lion, and a witch.

Lily Traverse - Child Tied 1st Place
Medium: Pencil Crayon, Pastel, Paint.

What People are learning, some diseases can't get to people without wearing a mask like the flu. What my painting is saying, sickness can get to your mask not you. So that's what i think is the bright side of Covid 19.

“Since time immemorial, Sməlq'míx people have walked gently on the diverse traditional territories. We would like to respectfully acknowledge that we are gathered today on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the Sməlq'míx People, which is home to the Upper Similkameen Indian Band. We are grateful to express our respect, and raise our hands in gratitude for the honour to live, work, learn and play in their unceded territory, and we thank them for their hospitality.”
